The arrest affidavit forBryan Kohberger, the 28-year-old Washington State University PhD student accused of committing the grizzly murders of Ethan Chapin, Xana Kernodle, Maddie Mogen, and Kaylee Goncalves, has been released and we now know much more about why police believe they arrested the right man.

Like many, this arrest took me by surprise. I was fairly convinced that the police had no suspects and no real direction in the case. Fortunately, I was wrong.

Kohberger was arrested at his family’s home in Chestnuthill Township, Monroe County, Pennsylvania, on December 30. [1]

The Evidence

The Odds…

One thing I think everyone correctly assumed was that the police had DNA from the suspect. It’s nearly impossible to carry out such a violent attack — four separate times — and not leave DNA behind, whether that be blood, hair, saliva, skin, etc.

In this case, DNA was discovered on the button of a leather sheath designed to carry a large knife. [2]
